This inspiration for this song came while driving to Canadian Tire. I have no idea why. But the line, "I've got a woman who's earned every line in her face", was the start.
And it came about because a little while earlier, I'd been channel surfing with Melodie and had stopped on the country music channel, where a video of a song about "the love of my life" was playing, sung by a gentleman of a certain age. I'd heard and liked the song - but unless I was misinterpreting the meaning, the lady in the video playing the "love of the singer's life", could only, by her apparent age, have been around for about 30% of it.
So it seemed to me that it was past time that we celebrated the love that lasts and counts for something,
I first sang the song at the Song Along in 1998. MY friends had a bit of an argument about whether the phrase, "whatever that means" belonged in the song. Was it dismissive, or what? There's never been any doubt in my mind that it belongs there. That's the whole point, isn't it - what the future means to you.
Anyway, here's a sample of it from the CD. And there's an earlier version, which I recorded as a demo, which is here in its entirety.
